If dunnage bags “fill the voids,” lashing straps “hold the cargo down.” In containers, ocean shipping and road haulage, lashing straps tie cargo to the container body — pallets to cargo — into one solid unit, preventing lengthwise shifting and toppling. They are the other workhorse of cargo securing.
1. What Do Lashing Straps Do?
Through high-strength webbing and locking hardware, lashing straps generate enormous tension, fixing cargo to pallets, trailer beds or container lashing points. Three core jobs: stop cargo sliding forward and back, stop cargo toppling, and bundle loose items into one unit. Heavy machinery, large cartons, coils and building materials are hard to ship safely without them.
2. Zinc Buckle vs. Ratchet Lashing Straps
- Zinc buckle straps: zinc-alloy buckle locking, simple to use, low cost — good for quick bundling of small and medium items and cartons, with moderate tension.
- Ratchet lashing straps: ratchet mechanism for tensioning, high tension with fine adjustment — suited to heavy equipment and strong securing of large items, reusable.
Choose by cargo weight and required holding strength: zinc buckle for light items and convenience, ratchet for heavy and large cargo where safety matters.
3. How to Use Lashing Straps Correctly
Threading: pass the webbing through the ratchet spindle or zinc buckle, leaving enough length. Anchoring: hook both ends to container lashing rings, pallets or trailer anchor points. Tensioning: work the ratchet handle back and forth, or pull the webbing hard on zinc-buckle models. Checking: push the cargo by hand after tensioning — no visible sway means done. Releasing: on arrival, flip the release mechanism, the webbing loosens by itself; roll it up for storage and reuse.
4. What Does a Good Lashing Strap Look Like?
Extra-thick webbing with double-stitched edges for cut and abrasion resistance — flexible, never snapping. Rust-treated metal parts, hooks that open and close smoothly. Under heavy load, neither webbing nor hardware should let you down — that is what makes a qualified cargo-securing tool.
Shanghai Tezheng Packaging manufactures industrial lashing straps in zinc-buckle and ratchet series, with thickened webbing and double-stitched edges that stay reliable under heavy loads. Need help with lashing strap selection or a quote? Get in touch.
