Dunnage Air Bag Structure Explained: What the Outer Bag, Inner Bag and Valve Each Do

A container dunnage air bag may look like just a big bag, but it is a precise assembly of three parts — outer bag, inner bag and valve — working together. Understanding the structure helps you read the specs when buying, avoid cheap-bag traps, and choose a genuinely durable product.

1. Outer Bag: the First Line of Defense Against Abrasion and Puncture

The outer bag touches cargo and container walls directly, providing abrasion resistance, puncture resistance and friction. Two common dunnage bag outers: kraft paper laminated with PP film (paper-plastic composite) — stiff surface, high friction coefficient, so the inflated bag does not slide; and PP woven fabric — tightly woven flat yarn, flexible and tear-resistant, suited to humid environments. Heavier outer material means better abrasion resistance — when buying, ask about the outer material and grammage.

2. Inner Bag: the Airtight Core

The inner bag is the “balloon” of the dunnage bag, holding air without leaking over time. Inner materials come in two types: plain PE and PA (nylon). Plain PE inner bags cost less and suffice for short hauls; PA co-extruded film inner bags (e.g. PA/PE multi-layer co-extrusion) offer better airtightness and puncture resistance, holding pressure longer on ocean voyages. Quality dunnage bags generally use PA co-extruded inner films — that is the dividing line between a good bag and a cheap one.

3. Valve: the Key to Inflation Speed

Dunnage bag valves come in standard and large sizes. Large valves have a bigger bore and higher air intake — the same bag inflates in less than half the time, ideal for high-volume shippers chasing loading efficiency. Also check the valve’s sealing: a good valve locks shut automatically after inflation and will not slowly leak.

4. Which Specs Matter When Buying Dunnage Bags?

  • Outer material and grammage: determines abrasion resistance and friction.
  • Inner bag material: PA co-extruded film beats plain PE; choose PA for ocean freight.
  • Valve type: large valves inflate faster — pick them when efficiency matters.
  • Size: match to void width; 50×100 to 120×180 cm covers 10–50 cm voids.
  • Manufacturer strength: source factories deliver stable quality and batch consistency.

Shanghai Tezheng Packaging has manufactured container dunnage air bags since 2010, using PA/PE co-extruded inner films, kraft-paper composite and PP woven dual outer series, with faster-inflating large-valve models. We control quality from materials and structure, so every bag stands up to long-haul transport.
